The 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior sprinter and middle distance talent won the 400-meter dash at the GFSA Class 7A state meet with a personal-best time of 45.78, setting a new state record in the event and leading the Wolverines to fourth place as a team. Sumner also won the 400 at the Brooks PR Invitational. His personal-best clocking in the 800-meter event this spring was the nation’s No. 2 time among prep competitors in 2022 and represented the No. 3 clocking in American prep history, just 0.08 seconds shy of the national high school record.
Sumner has maintained a 3.78 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on an athletic scholarship at the University of Georgia this fall.
A classical pianist, Sumner has served on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory council and has played a significant mentorship role as a volunteer coach in the school district’s middle school track program.
