The state’s returning Gatorade Runner of the Year, the 5-foot-10, 135-pound junior won the state meet this past season with a time of 16:15.60, breaking the tape 3.87 seconds ahead of his next-closest competitor and leading the Sabers to a second-place finish as a team. The 2019 Maui Interscholastic League Runner of the Year, Shields won five of nine races and finished as runner-up three times in 2019.
Shields has maintained a weighted 3.89 GPA in the classroom. He will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
Shields has volunteered locally with the Maui Humane Society and as a youth sports camp counselor.
