Matthews is a four-time state champion in outdoor track and field, having won the 400 and the 800 at the Class 4A state meet as both a freshman and sophomore, in addition to taking silver in the 1600 each year. She also won the 800 at the National Junior Olympic Championships in 2019 for the 15-16 age group.
