The 5-foot-5 junior won the state meet this past season with a time of 20:55.66, breaking the tape 20.3 seconds ahead of her next-closest competitor and leading the Spartans to a first-place finish as a team. The 2016 Maui Interscholastic League Female Cross Country Runner of the Year, Winham was undefeated during the MIL league season. She was also the top Hawaii finisher at the Foot Locker West Regional championships with a time of 20:49.7.
Winham has maintained a weighted 3.74 GPA in the classroom. She will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
Winham has volunteered locally with Best Buddies International and has donated her time to multiple community-service initiatives through the Rotary Interact Club. "Veronica had an amazing season, but her talent goes much deeper than that," said Chelsea Peterson, head coach of Baldwin High. "She puts in the hard work required to see such amazing results. She is determined to get better and puts in the work to do so."
