In his only meet of the abbreviated 2020 outdoor season, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound senior broke the state record in the 400-meter run this spring with a time of 47.96 seconds, which ranked as the nation’s No. 9 performance among prep competitors in 2020. Wailehua took second in the 400 at both the 2018 and 2019 state meets, and won the state championship in the event as a freshman.
Wailehua has maintained a 3.16 GPA in the classroom. He will attend the University of Oregon, where he will compete in track and field.
Wailehua has volunteered locally on behalf of a veterans’ home, beach clean-up initiatives, the American Red Cross and youth track programs.
