The 5-foot-4 junior won the 100-meter dash, the 200 and the 400 at the Division II state meet this past season, leading the Green Knights to their first state championship in 23 years. John took silver in the 400 at the New England Outdoor Championships with a state-record time of 56.21 seconds. She also set a Division II state record in the 200 at New Englands, placing seventh in 25.31.
John has maintained a B average in the classroom. She will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
John has volunteered locally as part of fundraising campaigns to benefit cancer research in addition to donating her time teaching English to refugees in Burlington. "I have coached almost 30 years at Rice and I have not seen someone of Sonia's caliber grace our track before," said Mark McKenna, head coach of Rice Memorial. "When Sonia races, it's a great thing to watch."
