The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior defender led the Demons to a 21-0 record and the Class 6A state championship this past season. Baca anchored a defense that allowed just nine goals all season while recording shutouts in all five postseason games. Playing with a three-man backline, Dodge City posted 14 shutouts on the season. The Class 6A co-Defensive Player of the Year, he was a First Team All-State selection as the Demons won their first state title in program history.
A member of the gifted program at Dodge City High, Baca has maintained a weighted 4.03 GPA in the classroom and represents one of the state's top academic candidates in meeting the Gatorade award's broad criteria. He will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
Baca has volunteered locally as a teacher at his church and as a youth mentor. He has also donated his time as a weight-lifting coach to middle-school students. "Miguel Baca is a tenacious defender," said Bobby Bribiesca, head coach of Wichita Northwest High. "He was instrumental in his team only allowing nine goals. His ability to read the game and shut down opponents made Dodge City a winner."
