The 5-foot-6, 125-pound senior won the Class 6A state meet this past season with a time of 15:50.3, breaking the tape 4.6 seconds ahead of his next-closest competitor and leading the Trojans to a third-place finish as a team. Young placed ninth at the Nike Cross Nationals South Regional championships and finished 11th at the Foot Locker South Regional championships, missing out on a trip to the national championship race by 1.2 seconds.
Young has maintained a weighted 4.19 GPA in the classroom. He remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
A member of the Spanish National Honor Society and Drug Free Youth at Jenks High, Young has volunteered locally at a food bank and homeless shelter and as a peer tutor. "Matt Young is a fierce competitor and a very consistent runner," said David Ayres, head coach of Bartlesville High. "He takes charge from the beginning of the race and pushes himself across the finish line every time."
