The 5-foot-1 junior won the state meet this past season with a time of 19:25.56, breaking the tape 44.29 seconds ahead of her next-closest competitor and leading the Vikings to a ninth-place finish as a team. Halpern won five of the six races she entered and was the top Hawaii finisher in the one race she did not win.
Halpern has maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom. She will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
Halpern has volunteered locally as the co-chair of the Hilo High Jingle Bell Fun Run. She has also donated her time to multiple community service initiatives through both her school’s National Honor Society and Key Club.
