The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior left-handed pitcher, outfielder and first baseman led the Bishops (31-2) to their second straight Class 3A state championship this past season. On the mound, Gilbert went 8-0 with a 0.33 ERA, fanning 73 and allowing just 15 hits and 21 walks in 53.1 innings pitched. He also batted .446 (29-for-65) with three home runs, 26 RBI, 23 runs scored, 18 walks and a .516 on-base percentage, while going 9-for-10 on stolen-base attempts. Ranked No. 1 in South Carolina’s Class of 2019 by Perfect Game, Gilbert threw a complete-game shutout in the championship clincher, a 1-0 win over Seneca High.
Gilbert has maintained a 3.25 GPA in the classroom. He has made a verbal commitment to play baseball on scholarship at Clemson University beginning in the fall of 2019.
Gilbert donates his time to the Charleston Miracle League, which serves children or young adults with special needs. He also volunteers locally with Carolina Basset Hound Rescue and is an altar server at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
