The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior set meet records in winning the 100-meter dash, 200 dash and 400 at the Group A state meet this past season, leading the Hawks to fourth-place finish as a team. Canary clocked the fastest all-class time in all three events. He also won the long jump to finish with a 40-point meet. He concluded his junior year with eight state titles in his prep track career.
Canary has maintained a 3.17 GPA in the classroom. He will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
Canary has volunteered locally at senior centers and as a youth track coach. "Freddy was amazing this season," said Chris Cress, head coach of Doddridge High. "While everybody knew he was fast all year, at the end of the season he put on an exhibition of his amazing talents. There was no doubt he was in a class all his own with his performance at the state meet."
