The 6-foot, 200-pound senior left-handed pitcher and outfielder led the Patriots to a 32-4-1 record and a fourth-straight Alabama Independent School Association Class AAA state championship this past season. Nelson compiled a 9-2 record on the mound with a 1.00 ERA, striking out 106 batters while allowing just 18 hits in 49 innings pitched. He fired a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts in a 6-1 win over Glenwood High that clinched the state title. At the plate, he posted a .463 batting average with six home runs, seven doubles, eight triples and a .895 slugging percentage.
Nelson has maintained a weighted 4.39 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at Auburn University this fall.
The vice president of his school’s Calculus Club and co-president of its Young Investors Club, Nelson has volunteered locally with Common Ground Troy, a co-curricular youth development organization. He has also donated his time as a youth baseball coach and instructor.
