The 5-foot-7, 130-pound junior middle-distance talent won the mile run at New Balance Nationals Outdoor this past season and his personal-best time of 4:01.20 ranked No. 7 nationally among boys prep competitors this spring. Carter also swept the 800- and 1600-meter runs at the Class AAA state meet, and his time of 4:01.54 in the latter ranked No. 2 nationally at the time of his selection.
Smith has maintained a B average in the classroom. He will begin his senior year of high school this fall.
Having recently learned to play the acoustic guitar, Smith has volunteered locally with the Juniata Valley Striders track club as a mentor to new runners.
