“Chris Newell is a rare breed. He’s not only our best player, but also one of our most humble, hardest-working and coachable kids, as well. On the field, there is nothing he can’t do well. He is truly a five-tool player with an ability to lead, motivate and care about his teammates and team’s success more than his own.”

Head Coach - Malvern Prep head coach

Athletic Excellence

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior outfielder had led the Friars to a 26-5 record at the time of his selection. Newell batted .375 with three home runs, 21 RBI and an on-base percentage of .516 through 31 games. A 2018 Under Armour All-American Game invitee, he is the state’s No. 2-ranked prep prospect as rated by Perfect Game and No. 3 by Prep Baseball Report.

Academic Achievement

Newell has maintained a 3.75 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of Virginia this beginning fall, but is projected as an early round selection in June’s Major League Baseball draft.

Exemplary Character

A devoted member of his parish community, Newell has completed a service-mission trip to the Dominican Republic and has volunteered locally as a baseball coach for children and young adults with special needs.
